Homework Policy

Homework is an important part of the learning programme at St Raphael's Central School. For all years K-10 homework is seen as a continuation / consolidation of the work taught in the classroom .

Much of the homework will be consolidation and revision of knowledge and skills learned that day or previously. Projects and assignments can be used to encourage the discovery of new material and knowledge. It is important that homework be seen in a positive way as encouraging the student to develop good study habits and be able to learn self-discipline .

Parents are encouraged to support the school in checking that students do the homework set by the class teacher. The specific policies of the departments within the school are set out below. It is expected that all Primary students will spend ten minutes of their homework time reading. Study sheets are given out each Monday for the week and are returned by the students on Thursday.

All students in Years K-10 are given some homework

  • maximum times for homework

15 - 20 minutes K-2

30 minutes Years 3-4

45 minutes Year 5

60 minutes Year 6

In the Secondary years,

  • Overnight homework in any KLA should not take longer than 20 minutes to complete.
  • Students should be given at least a week to complete major assignments .
  • Students in Years 7 and 8 are expected to do a minimum of 60 minutes each night.
  • Students in Years 9 and 10 would do a minimum of 90 minutes. All students should devote a portion of this time to reading.
  • Homework should normally be corrected.
  • Homework problems should be followed up. For example reasons for difficulties and remedial work to overcome these; reasons for incomplete homework .
  • Constant offenders should be brought to the attention of the coordinator.

Each Key Learning Area in the Secondary Department has a separate homework policy to suit the varying styles of work in each syllabus area.

Homework should:

  • be purposeful
  • not be new work
  • encourage continuity in subjects which occur infrequently
  • take account of individual differences in students
  • be “family friendly”
